These two lines of Sarvamangala Mangalye or Sarvamangala Strotram or the praise of Goddess Durga is recited by many people belonging to the Sanatan Hindu dharma. Even people who do not recite any other mantra at least know or have heard this strotram. There are many people who have heard this strotram in marriages and during Durga Puja.
These are the verses of the famous and very powerful Saptasati Chandi Strotram or the Durga Saptasati. The Saptasati is filled with hundreds of beautiful and powerful verses that are often used during different pujas.
“Sarva Mangala Mangalye Shive” is where the devotee calls mother Durga by her name “Shive” because she is the beloved wife of Lord Shiva. The words “Sarva Mangala” means who is the most auspicious and is a cause for the auspiciousness and well being of all. These words are used to refer to Goddess Durga, as a form of praise.
“Sarvartha Sadhike” are the words used by the devotee to tell her that the Goddess is one who fulfills all wishes and desires. Here the ‘desires’ are not the materialistic desires of the human body but the desires of the soul to attain the four ultimate desires namely, Dharma which refers to living a dutiful life. Artha, Kama, and Moksha are other thee longings of the devotee.
The second line in the verse calls Mother Durga “Sharanye” and “Trambake”, Oh the Goddess to be memorialized, the three-eyed Goddess! The third eye essentially means the ability to see through the past, present, and future, which is also a quality of her husband Lord Shiva. “Gauri” is also a favorite name of the Goddess as she is described as having a very bright complexion. She is also called Narayani in the Sarvamangala Strotram because she is the Shakti of the Ultimate Lord of the Universe.
Sarvamangal Stotram is recited often because its beautiful verses please the Goddess Durga.
