Om Namah Shivaya Meaning
Om: Before the Universe, there was a void of vibrations and pure existence. Out of the vibration came the sound of ‘Om’ and then the Universe was formed.
Namah: it means to bow down
Shivaya: means Shiva or inner self.
The mantra explores five signs. Five toes, five fingers, elements, etc. it is believed that Shiva has five activities to perform including, creating, keeping up, disguising, pulverizing, and effortlessly revealing. This mantra helps to purify our feelings. It also rectifies our smelling, tasting, seeing, feeling, and hearing. Chanting this mantra purifies and cleanses our self-being.
Origin of the mantra
The mantra is present in the Shri Rudram hymn which is the part of Krishna Yajurveda. The hymn is taken from the second chapter of the fourth book of Taittiriya Samhita. The mantra is present without the initial Om in the eighth verse of Namakam. It means salutation to Lord Shiva.
